Directions: Climb the short slope up to the Sculpture Garden and begin with Kentucky coffee tree, Gymnocladus dioicus (1), in the southwest corner. Moving around the left side of the garden you'll find sweet gum, Liquidambar styraciflua (2) and katsura tree, Cercidiphyllum japonicum (3). Exit the Sculpture Garden through the rear, passing to the right of the sculpture farthest to the rear, and head down the slope. Near the tree line hackberry, Celtis occidentalis (4), stands next to a large nut tree. Head for the path in front of the grove of large spruce trees, take a left, and wind your way around to Arboretum Road. A multi-stemmed specimen of hedge maple, Acer campestre (5), is on your right. Back-track along the path and veer off of it to reach the north end of Grossman Pond where you'll find a single specimen of black locust, Robinia pseudoacacia 'Bessoniana' (6). Move around to the right of the pond. Close to the road is a vase-shaped zelkova tree, Zelkova serrata 'Spring Grove' (7). Return to the sculpture garden to find two yellowwood trees, Cladrastis kentukea (8), on the southern edge. Finish the walk at the large scholar tree in the center of the Sculpture Garden, Styphnolobium japonicum (9). |
