Directions: Head north from the parking area to the largest tree in the vicinity, a tupelo, Nyssa sylvatica (1), that lies in front of the hedge. Two dawn redwoods, Metasequoia glyptostroboides (2), are close to the arboretum entrance. Cross the short entrance road and look for a single London plane tree, Platanus x acerifolia 'Bloodgood' (3). Head toward the Test Gardens building. Past the lilac shrubs, find a single Ginkgo biloba 'Sentry' (4). Near the Test Gardens building parking lot are three more London plane trees; these are the cultivar 'Liberty' (5). To the right of the building and behind two plastic hoop greenhouses is a beautiful mature specimen of Turkish filbert, Corylus colurna (6). Turn around and walk back through the Test Gardens along the left edge of the test beds. The primitive-looking, pyramid-shaped tree is bald cypress, Taxodium distichum (7). In line with the bald cypress and a few trees down from it is a multi-stemmed river birch, Betula nigra (8). Close to Arboretum Road, in the corner of the Zucker Shrub Collection is a grove of Washington hawthorn, Crataegus phaenopyrum (9). Cross the road and there you'll find a young crabapple, Malus 'Donald Wyman' (10), at the southern end of the parking lot. On the northern end, look for a very young specimen of hardy rubber tree, Eucommia ulmoides (11), and return to the beginning of the walk. |
