Cascadilla Gorge

Notice: Cascadilla Gorge Trail Closed
ITHACA, N.Y. - Due to unsafe conditions, the Cascadilla Gorge Trail is closed between Treman Triangle (at Court Street and University Avenue) and College Avenue Bridge until further notice. A section of the Gorge Trail has been undercut by Cascadilla Creek, causing the trail to partially collapse. This trail failure has created unsafe conditions for pedestrian traffic. Providing a safe trail and reopening the Cascadilla Gorge for public use is a priority for Cornell University. All efforts will be made to complete the repairs promptly, and to notify the public when the trail is reopened. For more information, please call 607.255.9638.

Description
The lower section of Cascadilla Gorge is truly a "gorges" display of rock, water and trees. Cascadilla Creek drops 400 feet from campus to downtown Ithaca, carving through bedrock - shales, siltstone and sandstone - exposing sedimentary rocks that were deposited 400 million years ago. Look for ripple marks on the rock surface, which once was the muddy floor of an ancient ocean. Here also is a tremendous variety of forest and creek habitats packed into a small area. |

Location
|
Cascadilla Gorge extends from the junction of Ithaca Road and Route 366, near the Humphreys Service Building, to the Treman Triangle downtown, at Court Street and University Avenue. Not only does Cascadilla Gorge exhibit important natural habitats, but also it provides a major pedestrian access to campus. You can hike the trail through Cascadilla Gorge from Rhodes Hall (the Cornell Theory Center) to Collegetown, and then all the way to downtown Ithaca.
