North Campus Natural Areas
|
Description
Palmer Woods and the natural areas near it encompass very diverse vegetation types: old forest, young forest, meadows, and wetlands. The many interfaces of different habitats make this a good birding site. More than half of this remarkable area is undisturbed old-growth forest dominated by large oaks. |

Location
|
The forested area (Palmer Woods) on north campus extends from the A-lot parking area and Jessup Field northward to the small creek near Sheldon Road. There are two major trails through the forest, plus several footpaths. The best access to the trails is near the intersection of Triphammer Road and Iroquois Road.
The two wetland areas are west of Pleasant Grove Road, on the North and South sides of the A-Lot parking area.

Property History and Gift Acknowledgement
Look for two strips of young forest in the southern end of the tract that differ noticeably from the old-growth forest surrounding them. Apparently these were open fields about forty years ago. In fact, investigation shows that these strips were once fairways of the Cornell golf course.
